Joule presented the relevant discoveries that preceded the Joule -Thompson effect. Gay-Lussac and J.P. Joule discovered that gas molecules attract one another (Noggle 104). They believed that the fact that gaseous molecules attract one another means that there is a force of attraction between them that is too significant to be neglected. They reiterated working on the dependence of energy of gases on pressure and as a result they investigated the dependence of energy of gases on pressure (Noggle 104).
